Planned Obsolescence…Planned Obsolescence is a marketing technique at it's most simple level. It's when one engineers a product to break after a certain amount of time.  This is mostly done to increase a profit margin. Consumers have to come back due to artificial scarcity created by the (company)individual. Now undoubtedly this is unethical for multiple reasons.
I won't even jump on the derivative issue which is intrinsic obsolescence; when the quality of a product must be diminished immediately in order create balance between rival companies. But the major factor is that when one buys something; it should be expected to last long. In light to our current technological standing.Second is that this is an environmental catastrophe. Due to this county's unsustainable growth model; planned obsolescence more then doubles our waste.
But there is a caveat amongst our frivolous lust for technology. Which is the inevitable speed and growth of our ingenuity. Moore's law states that the " number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles approximately every two years". Now what this practically means is; our tech is getting more ridiculous over time.
A syntax of the this is let's say your grandmother doesn't want to buy a new tv, because her tube will last forever. Nope. Not in a world of planned obsolescence. Your grandma if she wants the tv, she will be opted in to buy the new one that not only surfs the web, and drives her car, but comes conveniently with a microwave oven.
Joking aside we're on an incredible opulent destructive path. Lets's hope we can turn this around ship around.

I agree that pursing the growth of technology as an end onto itself is very dangerous, can look up say Heidegger's opinion on technology to find similar frustrations, but a designer can use planned obsolesce for neat little tricks. Read of Vlambeer's Glitchhicker as an interesting experiment one could create for gaming events.

IMO Apple does this, but on a subtler level, the previous iPhones get less and less support, updates, compatible hardware etc. iPhones come out every year pretty much.
